Storing and protecting a sealed Pokémon collection

Condition is most of the value in a collection, and most condition damage is avoidable and slow. None of the following is expensive; all of it matters more than people expect.

Sealed product: keep it flat and boxed

Sealed boxes crush at the corners and dent along the edges. Store them flat rather than stacked on their spines, and avoid putting weight on the top of a stack.

Original shrink wrap is part of the condition. Removing it to make something fit a shelf permanently changes what the item is.

Control light and humidity

  • Keep collections out of direct sunlight — foil and colour fade first
  • Avoid attics, garages, and basements where temperature and humidity swing
  • Aim for a stable room-temperature interior space
  • Silica packs help in humid climates, but airflow matters more

Singles: sleeve before you do anything else

A penny sleeve goes on first, then a toploader or semi-rigid holder. Sleeving prevents the surface scratching that happens simply from handling.

For cards you intend to keep long term, a rigid holder in a storage box beats a binder page under pressure.

Track what you own

A simple list of what you have prevents duplicate buying and makes insurance or resale straightforward later. Your Nxt Crd watchlist is a reasonable starting point for the products you are still chasing.
